As announced on the WHATWG mailing list the implementation of Web Forms 2.0 in Internet Explorer has started. Web Forms 2.0 updates the HTML4 forms chapter to include easy client side validation of user input. (Without the use of javascript.) It hasn’t advanced to call for implementations yet, but it’s expected it will do so soon. In April of this year it was submitted to the W3C by Opera and Mozilla who together with Safari plan to implement it natively in their rendering engines.
